What does Melanotan 2 do?

Melanotan 2 (MT-2) is a lab-made peptide. It copies a hormone your body uses to darken skin. Labs study it for tanning with less time in the sun, and for sexual desire. It is a close relative of PT-141.

What researchers study it for

Skin tanning. It is studied for darkening the skin with less time in the sun.
Sexual desire. Research also looks at desire and arousal in women and men.
Appetite. Some studies look at a drop in appetite and small changes in body fat.
Sun damage. It was first made to test whether a tan could protect skin from the sun.

How it works, in everyday words

Receptors work like locks on cells, and Melanotan 2 is a key that fits several of them. In skin cells it turns on the lock that makes melanin, the pigment that gives skin its colour. In the brain it turns on the lock that controls sexual response. That is why one peptide is studied for two very different things.

The Science Behind It

Melanotan 2 turns on melanocortin receptors (docking spots on cells). In skin, the MC1R receptor tells cells to make more melanin, the pigment that darkens skin. In the brain, the MC4R receptor is part of the system that controls sexual response. Because it fits several of these receptors at once, it is studied for more than one effect.

Where Research Stands

Melanotan 2 was first made at the University of Arizona in the 1990s, to test whether a tan without sun could protect skin. It has never been approved for people in any country. Its close relative bremelanotide (PT-141) is approved as Vyleesi for one specific use in women.
